Frequently Asked Questions
What is micro-roasting?
You can compare micro-roasting coffee to micro-brewing beer. We purchase small lots (10 to 20 pounds) of green, gourmet coffee beans imported into the United States by our supplier. Our selections are limited to fair trade (see related FAQ below) and organic coffee beans only.
We roast small batches only when ordered so that you get the freshest, most robust coffee possible. For the small package, we start with 8 ounces of green coffee beans; 16 ounces for the large package. Roasting causes the green beans to lose about 18% of their weight, but gain 64% of their volume. So, the small package contains about 6.5 ounces of roasted coffee; the large package approximately 13 ounces. If you like a full-bodied brew, you’ll need about 1 ounce of roasted coffee beans per 12-cup pot of coffee. For a lighter brew, you can use less coffee. Don’t order more than you can drink in a week or two and never store your coffee beans in the freezer.

Each batch is unique, but that’s the fun of it. You’ll not get stuck in a routine of the same old coffee every time. We provide whole roasted coffee beans so that you get the best flavor from freshly ground coffee right before you brew it. If you don’t have a coffee grinder, we encourage you to invest in a “burr”-style coffee grinder.

What does "Fair Trade" mean?
"Fair Trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate and flowers."

About the People who Grow It

With a  passion for farming and love for their land, the father-son duo of Thomas Manyako and Joseph Soto exude deep pride in their coffee crop. Their 4-acre farm is on the slopes of the Elgon mountain range near the famous Sipi Falls. They know good coffee practices yield high quality coffee, and more revenue for their family. They are just one of thousands of small-holder farm families who pool together and provide coffee to Ugandan coffee exporter Kawacom Ltd. Kawacom provides local coffee processing facilities, helps farmers obtain organic certification, promotes sustainable agriculture, and socially and environmentally responsible business practices.

Guatemala Huehuetenango
Fair Trade, Organic

About the Coffee
  • Cupping notes: Pronounced acidity and medium body. A “wineyness” and spice-like aftertaste.
  • Cultivation: shade-grown on the Pacific slopes in southwestern Guatemala, 72" rain per year.
  • Altitude: 4,000-5,250 feet
  • Tree type: Caturra, Bourbon, Typica
  • Preparation: hand-picked, washed, sun-dried
About the People who Grow It

The ASOBAGRI co-op in the Huehuetenango region was founded in 1989 by 20 K'anjob'al Mayan coffee and cardamon farmers. Despite political instability and poverty, ASOBAGRI grew steadily in the 1990s, becoming Fair-Trade certified in 1999. They use revenue to promote literacy, diversify crops and income (recently they began inter-cropping banana and citrus trees with coffee plants), support sustainable agriculture (such as creating compost from coffee cherry waste), improve coffee production, and support a healthcare program assisting member families in covering emergency medical costs.

Mexican Decaf
Fair-trade, Organic, Mountain grown

  • Cupping notes: Molasses, nutty, good acidity
  • Review from importer: “Mexican coffees are known for being light to medium in body with mild acidity and good balance. Today Mexico, like many other Central and South American countries is gaining new attention for its single origin, fair-trade and organic coffees. Some of this is due in part to the Mexican Coffee Council which has been working to increase Mexican coffee's reputation by implementing an official quality certification program. This is also partly due to consumers increased interest in high-quality single-origin coffees. Mexico also has a long history of offering organic and fair-trade coffees, something that helps set it apart from other newer-to-the-fold countries. Currently Mexico is the main producer of organic coffee in the world according to the Mexican Coffee Council.”

Peruvian Decaf
Norte
Fair-trade, Organic

This decaf originates in the Northern coffee growing area of Peru, centered around San Ignacio in the Cajamarca district. As opposed to the decaf lots that used to be sourced directly from the decaffeinating plant, this was imported as a good specialty grade lot, cupped, approved, then sent to Mexico for decaffeination. It's a Fair Trade and Organic Certified coffee as well, from the Perunor cooperative. It's a very nice cup ... the dry fragrance is very appealing, with strong nutty tones, molasses syrup sweetness, and apple-like fruited hints. The wet aromatics are bright and clean, as are the cup flavors. It's really an outstanding decaf. Apple fruit notes (with a bit of apple skin tightness in the finish), brown sugar sweetness, and elevated, crisp acidity are the main characteristics here. The body is fairly light. The finish has tea-infusion character, lemon herbal flavors.

Do these coffees taste good?
Of course! Compare it to the full, robust flavor of your favorite coffee shop's brew.

We’re so sure you’ll like our coffee that we guarantee it. If you aren't completely satisfied, return the rest of the beans for a full refund with no questions asked.

Don't take our word for it, though; read what customers are saying below.

Comments: This is my second order of the Peruvian decaf. The first batch I tried was divine. But this second one surpasses it! Poore Man's Brew is the best!

"Great!"

Gina on Saturday, April 03, 2010 12:30:57 PM

Comments: Really great coffee! It was worth trying simply because it is organic and free trade, but the coffee itself will keep us coming back. Good flavour without the bitterness. Even our youngest daughter when asked this morning if she wanted some coffee, asked if it was the Poore Man's. When we told her it was, then said, "Oh, yes please!".

"Incredibly Smooth"

Jenny on Tuesday, March 02, 2010 7:38:46 PM

Comments: In the bag the beans smelled divine. Grinding them was an olfactory delight. But the proof of the quality was in the cup. I like half and half in my coffee. Never have I seen my cream blend so velvetlly. And then the first sip: pure heaven!

"The Search Is Over"

David on Tuesday, March 02, 2010 7:20:19 AM

Comments: My search for that "great tasting coffee" is finally over. The fresh, bold flavors of Poore Man's Brew makes it an easy choice over those expensive, off-the-shelf brands.

"Very Nicely Roasted"

Comments: I really like waking up with a cup of Poore Man's Brew. Often coffee-house blends taste burnt, not so with the Poore Man! Good taste, nice caffeine level, I highly recommend!
